Restoran Ratha @ Raub

Arguably the most famous restaurant in Raub, Restoran Ratha is a must go place if you happened to be stopping by at town for a hearty meal. As with most famous eateries in Malaysia, the massive crowd is a tell tale sign of how good the food is and Restoran Ratha is no exception. The afternoon crowd occupied most of the tables but thankfully the service was prompt and we got ourselves seated within a few minutes.

The most popular dish at this restaurant is Curry Fish Head but because our stomach was already full, we decided to go for a ‘lighter’ meal. Still it was hard not to catch a glimpse of the metal pot with a sizable fish head soaked in deep red curry gravy every time the waiter brought it out from the kitchen.

The curry mutton deserves a good thumbs up. The meat was soft and the gravy was thick which goes well with a plate of white rice. There was also no gamey smell which is a good thing as most people dislike the pungent smell. It was spicy but that did not deter me from taking spoonfuls of the gravy.

Surprisingly their fried chicken was equally good. The skin has a lot of flavour in it although it wasn’t crispy enough.

Still I find myself eating a few pieces as it was really good.

Another popular dish in this restaurant is the Roti Canai. I didn’t manage to try this but I heard it was good.

The curry squid packs a punch although it was really spicy. Although Ratha’s curry tends to lean on the spicier side it does not overpower the taste of the rich spices that were infused in the gravy.

I only wish that I have an empty stomach to eat more that day.

It is easy to understand why this restaurant is so famous. With the unmistakable whiff of curry smell once you stepped in to this place, you will know that something good is cooking inside their kitchen.
